Sura 37: AS-SAAFFAT (THOSE WHO SET THE RANKS) - Juz' 23

عَلَى سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ ﴿۴۴﴾
Qarib: sitting face to face upon couches,
Sarwar: on couches facing each other.
Shakir: On thrones, facing each other
Pickthall: On couches facing one another;
Yusufali: Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):
يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ ﴿۴۵﴾
Qarib: a goblet from a spring shall be passed round to them
Sarwar: They will be served with a cup full of crystal clear wine,
Shakir: A bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs,
Pickthall: A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,
Yusufali: Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,
بَيْضَاءَ لَذَّةٍ لِلشَّارِبِينَ ﴿۴۶﴾
Qarib: white, a delight to the drinkers,
Sarwar: delicious to those who drink it
Shakir: White, delicious to those who drink
Pickthall: White, delicious to the drinkers,
Yusufali: Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),
لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنْزَفُونَ ﴿۴۷﴾
Qarib: there is neither sickness in it, nor intoxication.
Sarwar: but not harmful or intoxicating.
Shakir: There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith
Pickthall: Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.
Yusufali: Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
وَعِنْدَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ عِينٌ ﴿۴۸﴾
Qarib: And with them will be maidens (houris) who restrain their wide glances
Sarwar: They will have with them loving wives with big black and white eyes
Shakir: And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes;
Pickthall: And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,
Yusufali: And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَكْنُونٌ ﴿۴۹﴾
Qarib: as if they were hidden pearls.
Sarwar: who are as chaste as sheltered eggs.
Shakir: As if they were eggs carefully protected
Pickthall: (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).
Yusufali: As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ ﴿۵۰﴾
Qarib: They will go to one another asking each other questions.
Sarwar: They will turn to each other and ask questions.
Shakir: Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other
Pickthall: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Yusufali: Then they will turn to one another and question one another.
قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْهُمْ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٌ ﴿۵۱﴾
Qarib: One of them will say: 'I had a companion
Sarwar: One of them will say, "I had a companion who asked me,
Shakir: A speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine,
Pickthall: A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade
Yusufali: One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),
يَقُولُ أَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُصَدِّقِينَ ﴿۵۲﴾
Qarib: who would say: "Are you among the believers (of the resurrection)?
Sarwar: 'Do you believe in the Day of Judgment?
Shakir: Who said: What! are you indeed of those who accept (the truth)?
Pickthall: Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?
Yusufali: "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?
أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ ﴿۵۳﴾
Qarib: When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we be recompensed?"
Sarwar: Shall we be recompensed for our deeds after we die and become bones and dust?
Shakir: What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?
Pickthall: Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?
Yusufali: "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"
